Meeting Tuesday October 14

Greetings Cohort!

Our next official meeting will be at 7pm on October 14th at Danny's Diner in Cambridge (300 Beacon St Somerville, MA 02143).  Please join us for some average coffee, greasy diner food, and excellent conversation.

For those of you who like to know what's on the docket: I (Sarah) and Jeff will be facilitating a conversation on "Proclamation" in the Christian Tradition.  I encourage you, if you are interested, to come with your own insights and experiences and make this a classic "emergent conversation"

Take care, and see you then!

Welcome to the New Year!

Hi, my name is Sarah and I am writing to welcome everyone back who has been away and to encourage anyone who is interested to join us this TUESDAY evening  at Danny's Diner (300 Beacon St Somerville, MA 02143) in Somerville at 7 p.m. for what Jeff fondly calls "great dinner food, mediocre coffee and exciting conversation."

We will be using this time to explore issues of leadership, our goals and visions for the year, and possible events for the upcoming months.   There is a lot in the works, and we are super excited about the year, so please come if you can, and if not, feel free to post comments to this about your ideas and hopes for the year!  I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!

Two Dollars A Day: More info

Goal of event: To facilitate a dialogue about the issue of social justice action in the Emergent Church through a three day event grounded in the spiritual practice of solidarity with the global poor. This event will be advertised to members of the entire HDS community, and I believe that anyone, not just Christians from the Emergent Church can find a point of connection to the topic at hand.

Teaching: We have engaged Will Samson author of Justice in the Burbs to come and speak at HDS on April 29th (Sperry Room, 7pm). His book is about how we can learn to live just lives in our current situations. He has a new book coming out in the fall, yet untitled, on consumerism. We have asked him to give a lecture on how consumerism contributes to, and affects the issue of global poverty, focusing especially on things that we can do in our lives to make a difference. Will is on the organizing board with Emergent Village, and is also writing a third book on the issue of justice and poverty.

Spiritual Practice, Less Than Two Dollars a Day: During the three days of the event, the HDS Emergent Cohort and other affiliated groups will be leading an initiative encourage people to live at a level of less than $2 a day for three days. This is to create a feeling of solidarity with the global poor, of whom 1/3 of the world live at a level of less than $2 a day (US). 12 people from the Cohort are also currently involved in an Economic discipleship group, in which we have completed our budgets to see where we are spending our money and to try to figure out places we
can cut back spending. We anticipate using our budgets as part of this spiritual practice and to encourage others to do the same. If for example, we find out that we are spending $100 a day, we would make that a fundraising goal for the event, to emphasis the extreme disparity between our lifestyles and the lifestyles of the rest of the world.

Action: we will be using this event both to raise awareness and money for global poverty. The money we raise from the Less Than $2 a Day event we will donate to an organization somewhere in the world that seeks to directly get people out of poverty, such as an organization that gives micro loans, or buys cows for villages.

Community Building: During the Less Than $2 a day event, we will set up a community dinner each night where participants can come to eat a meal together that is representative of something that someone in another part of the world would eat as part of a diet that costs less
than $2 a day. We will also provide sample menus so that people can accomplish this spiritual practice at home, with, for example 1⁄2 cup rice and 1tbs of peanut butter as a meal that may serve as part of the budget. We also plan to have a final potluck where people will bring
what they have from their refrigerator to share a "Bring what you have" potluck (no buying allowed). The first community meal will tentatively be set up as the “reception” that will follow Will Samson’s lecture.

Dialogue: On the second night we will convene optional small groups/ or breakout sessions to discuss the idea of justice in the Emergent Church and to brainstorm steps that we can take to move forward. People will present these ideas the next day at the closing worship service. We have reserved Belva’s at 6pm on May 30th for this.

Worship: Everyone is invited to worship at the Crossing worship service (downtown in St. Paul’s Cathedral) on Thursday night at 6:30pm where the reflection that night will be on a theme related to the topic of social justice and to come together for communion and prayer and time of worship.

Commitment: After the Thursday worship service, at the potluck, people will present their ideas and we will choose one idea to take forward from this point. We will ask for people to commit to being part of a group to work on exploring this.

Check back for more concrete details in a few days. Thanks!

Fair Trade Action Day

Hi Everyone, The Cohort will be participating in this event on Saturday. I hope you can come. Let me know if you have any questions, or want to meet up to go.

Join Christians from all over Boston for the Boston Faith and Justice Network's April 5th supermarket action day. This event will mark the beginning of our campaign to increase the sale of fair trade products in the Boston area.

We will go out in small groups to three local supermarkets and cafes in Cambridge and Somerville. There will be two components of these visits:

1. A product survey at local supermarkets to determine what fair trade products they currently sell and in what quantity and variety these products are available.

2. Interviews with managers in which we will voice our concerns as consumers for an increase in the availability of fair trade products (a script will be provided). We will leave information informing managers how to make these products available to consumers.

The day will begin with a brief training on how to talk to store managers and a few short practice runs of conversations. Small groups will each go to three stores and return to report their findings and celebrate.

The event will be located at First Church Cambridge, UCC. For directions, see: http://www.firstchurchcambridge.org/pages/about/directions/

Please feel free to invite others you think would be interested in helping out. Contact Andy Ober if you have more questions: andrewjlober@gmail.com.

This day is just the first step in a larger campaign. There will be opportunities for follow-up in the weeks following.

Will Samson

The Boston Emergent Cohort is pleased to announce that Will Samson, author of Justice in the Burbs, will be speaking at Harvard Divinity School on April 29th, 2008, 7pm Sperry Room.
More info to come.
Free and open to the public.

New plan for Friday

Hi guys,
the Kupenda fundraiser is still on for Friday and I encourage you all to go. However, I wasn't aware that it is kind of hard to get to by public transportation (you take the Orange Line and then a bus and then walk), so I don't think we are going to be able to have our official Cohort meeting there after all. I hope those of you who have cars though, can still make it to support our friends.
The rest of the Cohort will be possibly meeting sometime around March 25th. I will be out of town, but if another meeting occurs, Jeff Gentry will be in touch with you.
Hope you are all well,
Anna

March Cohort meeting: Kupenda Fundraiser

hey all: this is what we will be doing for our March meeting.

Three of our Cohort members are directly involved in this, so rather than having a separate meeting this month, we will be heading down to Newton to support our brothers and sisters and their awesome organization Kupenda, and in the process listen to some great music and have some time for conversation and coffee.
I'll send out more info later as to where we can meet to travel there together. But mark your calendars!

Here's the info:

The First Baptist Church of Newton hosts a monthly coffeehouse featuring different musicians from the area. The coffeehouse hosts a variety of artists whose work ranges from folk, jazz and roots-rock to gospel, world music and more, performing in a unique and inviting setting in our church.

This night will include mostly acoustic guitar playing and some original music. Featured musicians will include Ric Allendorf, Andrew Bauer, Charley Eastman, The Newton Baptist Youth Choir, Joe Tang, Julie-Ann Bauer, and Cynthia Bauer.

On Friday March 14th at 8PM, First Baptist Church of Newton will host a Kupenda musician night for their coffeehouse. Cost is $10 per person before show if purchased at the church and $12 at the door. Half of the ticket price will go to the church and the other half will go to Kupenda. All additional donations will go to support children with disabilities in the Malindi district of Kenya. Please check the website site for further details. We have a few musicians lined up but are still open to the possibility of others who would be interested in donating their time and talents. Please contact kupenda@kupenda.org if you have an interest in helping to put on this event. Otherwise we would love to see you there. Cindy will be playing guitar and singing a couple songs in the middle of the event with a short description of Kupenda's mission.

The coffee house is located at the church which is in the heart of Newton Centre, at the corner of Beacon and Centre Streets. The address is 848 Beacon Street, Newton Centre, MA 02459. There is a parking lot behind the church as well as street parking and the Newton Centre parking lot “Triangle” diagonally across the street.

tomorrow

Hey dear Boston friends,
Just a reminder about our meeting tomorrow at 7pm. I'm looking through Brian McLaren's new book, Everything Must Change for a discussion topic, so be thinking in terms of social justice and global poverty for what we'll be discussing tomorrow.

McLaren opens his book with two probing questions:
1. What are the biggest problems in the world?
2. What does Jesus have to say about these global problems?
Anyway, I thought if you gave a little thought to these questions before tomorrow we could probably have a great discussion. I'll find a few passages from McLaren's book to get us going, and then we'll just open it up to discussion.

See you soon! (at 5A durham st., Somerville MA 02143)
Anna
PS: Sarah's got great news from her ordination board this past weekend in CA so we'll also use tomorrow night as a bit of a celebration for her. So please try to come if you can! :)

Next meeting: Feb 26, 7pm

For most of the rest of the semester, the majority of us are meeting in the Lazarus group on Wednesdays. So our "normal" cohort activities will be limited to the once a month Boston Cohort meeting. I'm thinking, and if anyone has other ideas, let me know, of seeing what it would be like to do a merger of what we have been doing in our weekly and monthly meetings for our next large group meeting, Feb 26, 7pm. This means that we will try meeting in a house for the first time, and sharing a meal there rather than eating out. Also perhaps someone can bring a meditative element to share alongside of the short reflection that leads into our discussion. Anyway, just so you know, we're going to change it up a bit and see how it goes.

Lazarus Group

Our first meeting of the Lazarus group will be this Wednesday at 7pm. I'll get the location to you all soon.

Lazarus Group

This spring the Boston Cohort will be hosting a Lazarus at the Gate bible study starting on Wednesday Feb 13th at 7pm. This is sponsored by the Boston Faith and Justice Network. The blurb about the group states that “it is a discipleship group intended to encourage ‘’rich'’ Christians to seek justice in our relationship with those who are poor, starting with our own lifestyles.”
The study will cover:
* Old and New Testament themes regarding wealth and poverty
* Reflecting on our own budgets and consumer habits
* Exploring responsible consumerism, fair trade, and simplicity as components of a globally just lifestyle
* Practical ways to respond to poverty and hunger from relief and development to political advocacy

- So far we have about 10 people committed so let me know pretty soon if you are interested, I think there is a optimal number of people that would be good for the study, but we could probably work something out if there is a lot of interest.

We will be doing this Bible study every Weds but the last one of the month from 7-8:30 pm. Then from 8:30-9:30pm we’ll have our regular weekly cohort meetings. (At least that’’s the plan for now). The purpose for this split in times is so that those of you who want to commit to the Bible study can, but so that we are also able to stay flexible and welcoming to newcomers. The study will go for about 10 sessions, and wrap up by the end of April.

We will be meeting this Tuesday at 7:30 pm at Sarah’’s Apartment: (5A Durham ST. #3, Somerville) because this week is Ash Wednesday. Then after that we will be meeting on Wednesdays for the rest of the semester, except for the last Tuesday of the month when we will meet with the larger Boston Cohort. FYI: This meeting will be taking place also at Sarah’’s (address above) and not Danny’’s this month, it will occur on Feb 26, 7pm.

Try to make it on Tuesday if you think you might be interested in the study because hopefully Andy from the BFJN will be visiting to present the material to us (if not, I have it, so we can still look at it) so that you can see if it is something you would be interested in.
